This report will provide the insurer with a comprehensive evaluation of the vessel. It will allow the insurer to determine whether the vessel is an acceptable risk. The report is focused mainly on structural integrity and safety.

Older, nonstandard, and modified vessels may require a survey report prior to being accepted and covered by an insurance underwriter. It is becoming more common for vessels of 5 years or older to be required to have a survey report every 5 years by an insurance underwriter.

The insurance survey is focused on the integrity and safety of the vessel. The survey will check that general upkeep and maintenance of the vessel structure and critical systems has been maintained. Along with the general structure, items such as skin fittings, bilge pumps, shaft seals, gas systems and safety equipment will be checked.

A haul out will be required to check underwater items.
